Will My Housekeeper Need Health Insurance Too?
Assuming you are resident in the Emirate of Dubai or Abu Dhabi the answer is, “Yes.” As a sponsor of your housekeeper or nanny you will need to provide him or her with a Health Authority of Abu Dhabi) HAAD or (Dubai Health Authority) DHA compliant plan. For Dubai residents this must be in place by 30th June 2016.
Therefore if you renew a visa or sponsor a new domestic helper you will need to have a policy in place. In practice, I am receiving mixed reports about the enforcement of this regulation but the regulation has been in place since 1st January. So how much does it cost and where can you get it?
The basic DHA plan, known as Essential Benefits Plan (EPB), is only available to those earning AED4,000 per month or less. There are currently 9 insurers offering the EPB and they are listed under Participating Insurers on the website www.isahd.ae which part of DHA.
There is a maximum annual limit of AED150,000 (about US$41,000) for all medical treatment. The plan covers pre-existing conditions, chronic conditions and provides an element of maternity cover as well as a limited network of outpatient clinics and hospitals. There are also cover for preventative treatment such as regular diabetes screening.
The cost of the EBP is set by the DHA within certain limits and reviewed regularly. Currently the cost is around AED700 (US$190) per annum.
I hope the above was useful. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.
